STD’s or Sexually Transmitted Diseases are infections that can be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. These are also called Sexually Transmitted Infections or STI’s.

Different Methods of STD Testing

Different methods of STD testing and the pros and cons associated with each of them are described below.

Clinics/Doctors Office

When you go for STD testing in a doctor’s office, you will need to answer questions about your medical history and sexual activity. Your sample will be collected, and the treatment will be conducted according to the results.

  • STD testing in a doctor’s office is more expensive than other options.
  • The results of the tests will be placed on your permanent medical record.

Free or low-cost STD clinics operate almost in the same manner as a doctor’s office. However, in these clinics there are doctors specialized in STD’s. These clinics also offer more cutting-edge testing options.

  • You will need to spend a lot of time to go through all the procedures.
  • If you want to do your STD testing anonymously, there is no scope for you.

Online STD Testing

You can buy FDA approved STD tests by visiting a website through this process. They offer individual tests or packages that can test for multiple infections. These testing companies partner with major medical labs and offer safe, reliable testing. These are convenient and maintain confidentiality. Some of them can even get you physical support, if the result is positive. Moreover, depending on the result, many of these can have a doctor send a prescription to a local pharmacy. The labs will only need a small blood or urine sample for the testing.

The testing process is quick in this way; many of them provide the result within 1 to 3 working days. In addition, you do not have to talk about your sex life to a doctor.

At-Home Kits

There are only two at-home testing kits approved by FDA for testing STD’s. OraQuick® In Home HIV Test is the most common among them. You can find it online at various sites including the OraSure website and Amazon. It is a rapid HIV test approved for in-home uses. The test uses an oral swab to test a fluid sample from the upper and lower gums. It provides a result in about 40 minutes. However, you need to do a follow-up test for confirmation.

There are some services in some states that send an in-home test kit to your home. This kit does not test a sample, but you can send a sample to their lab for testing. Based on the result, further treatment is provided.

The information about STD’s and STD testing are important and everyone should know these to stay safe.
